Inmersión en la pecera

Marivi Ibarrola

From October 3 to November 3, El Imparcial presents “Inmersión en la pecera: un retrato cultural de los años 80”, the first retrospective in Madrid of Marivi Ibarrola’s photographic material. A tireless narrator of the spirit of that decade and author of “Yo disparé en los 80”, book published by Munster in 2012, Ibarrola’s work is a personal and unique glance from deep within the dances and ideals of a youth culture which laughed at the future after gaining back their present.

We are moving to new premises. After almost 20 years in our Espoz y Mina office, we are changing neighbourhoods and will soon be in Carabanchel. In such a long time we have accumulated A LOT of stuff, so it's going to take us some days to be operative again and you probably won't hear much from us in the next couple of weeks. See you soon!

LP reissues

Sex Museum have been one of the essential bands in the evolution of Spanish rock since the mid-80s, with a brilliant career that comprises several genres and has made them a key name both in Spain and Europe. Now, as part of their 30th anniversary and joining forces with Munster Records, the Madrid band has embarked on an extensive reissue program of their six first LPs. The records have been remastered from the original tapes and are pressed on 180g vinyl, accompanied by a CD and liner notes in English and Spanish. The sleeves faithfully reproduce the original artwork. The first releases are "Fuzz Face" and "Independence", two essential and unique records when they came out, which for years have been very hard to find. Get them here. The band's four following albums will be available in the next months.

Black Friday Record Store Day

As part of this year's Black Friday Record Store Day, we are very excited to reissue, with our friends at Light In The Attic, Lee Robinson Machine’s "Family Album". This is the first ever vinyl reissue of this strange, one-of-a-kind album recorded in Madrid in 1997 by Englishman Lee Robinson. In his only solo LP, we hear an eclectic mix of blues, electronic, reggae, psych, pop, and post-punk influences.

This limited edition reissue, finally available on vinyl as Lee originally intended, is a long overdue tribute to an incredibly special artist and album, and comes as the highest personal recommendation of both Munster and Light In The Attic.

More info here.

EUROVISION

BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

It's Eurovision week and here at Munster we've decided to take part too, but in our own way. So we've rounded up some of the European artists that appear on our records to create a line-up for an alternative Eurovision. Hope you enjoy it, pick a favourite and vote!

CZECH REPUBLIC

From the Czech Republic comes Marta Kubisová with 'Modrej Vres', where her powerful voice shines surrounded by a wonderful production.

SPAIN

Micky actually represented Spain at Eurovision in 1977, where he finished 9th with 'Enséñame a cantar'. Now accompanied by Los Tonys, 'El problema de mis pelos' sounds like a guaranteed top 3 position.

UNITED KINGDOM

Punk attitude is missing from Eurovision these days, but to solve that here's Steve Treatment from the UK with his experimental glam rock hit 'Change Of Plan'.

ITALY

Can you imagine singing at Eurovision and being out of tune in front of millions of people watching at home? That's not something Italian Sandro Brugnolini has to worry about while he plays 'Megattera', an instrumental full of groove.

FRANCE

Although Claudine Coppin spent part of her singing career in Spain during the 60s, here she represents her native France with her irresistible style and the sparkling 'Saint-Trop' Express'.

SWEDEN

From the country that gave us Abba come Aoousch! with a slab of another of the great Swedish specialties: raw and powerful garage punk.

PORTUGAL

Blues one-man band The Legendary Tigerman (aka Paolo Furtado) is accompanied this time by Asia Argento in the sensual and captivating 'Life Ain't Enough For You'.

THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands have a distinguished garage beat tradition and De Keefmen pay it tribute with 'You Remind Me', an amazing Outsiders cover.

RECORD STORE DAY

April 18th

April 18th is Record Store Day, and to celebrate it we have some special releases that will be available at record shops from this Saturday. Volume 3 of our "R&B Hipshakers" series gets the double LP treatment, so you can have all those King and Federal killer cuts together. Handy! Also on 12", the first ever reissue of "Cántame esa canción que dice, yeah, yeah, yeah" by Five or Six, one of the less heralded acts of the classic Cherry Red era. Released only in Spain in 1982, the LP contains a few cuts from their fantastic early singles and EPs but Five or Six used this opportunity to offer mostly tracks unavailable elsewhere, all displaying the diverse and immense talent of a band that should be more well known. We also have a handful of 7"s, starting with the facsimile reissue of the 1981 debut by Philadelphia's Sic Kidz, one of the finest examples of psycho-garage-punk from the era. In 1975 Alex Chilton went into the Ardent Recording Studios with producer Jon Tiven and out of some tumultuous recording sessions came a number of loose and unpolished gems, which would ultimately become the "Bach's Bottom" album. Munster is proud to present a new 7" featuring previously unreleased alternate versions of three of those tracks, another instance of Alex Chilton magic. In 1971, Mexican band Antorcha released an EP documenting the transition from their beat origins as Las Antorchas to their politically-charged work in the 70s. Featuring three songs written by the band, two in English and the wonderful slow burner 'El jardín del edén' in Spanish, it's a a rare psych rock gem and a pivotal moment in Mexican rock. We also have a special split 7" featuring two untamed 60s nuggets from our "Algo salvaje" compilation. English band Tomcats visited Spain in 1965 and they recorded this rifftastic and fuzzed out version of the classic copla song 'A tu vera'. On the other side, 'Te fuiste' by Pamplona's Los Junior's is a spectacular midtempo driven by an imposing rhythm and an ondulating organ of clearly lisergic reminiscences. Finally, a fantastic 7" on Vampisoul by Orlando Julius. A few years into his music career, in the late 1960s he expanded his own band and began to explore an increasingly deeper, funkier highlife fusion, responding to rock, psychedelia and the funk grooves that were coming from the USA, as well as Fela Kuti's new Afrobeat direction. The two tracks featured on this 1970 single are wonderful examples of that constantly evolving sound, getting mellower, rootsier and always profoundly hip shaking.

Better on paper

Some things will always look better printed on paper, that’s why we’ve made some posters advertising a few recent releases and other titles which will come out in the next few months such as Destroy All Monsters, Afrosound of Colombia 2, Algo Salvaje and Crime. Also, if you want to carry a picture of your favourite Munster artist in your wallet, we’ve also made pocket-sized cards of 14 acts from our catalogue. You’ll receive some of this material with your mail orders from our web and some posters will also be available from selected retailers.

Premios de la Música Independiente

Last night we put our best clothes on to attend the Premios de la Música Independiente, where Garotas Suecas won the Best Brazilian Artist award! Thanks a lot to everyone who supports the band, and to UFI for the award and a great ceremony. Here's a video of the award in action, a wonderful doo rag created by Olaf Ladousse. Look out for its sounds on the next album!

April 24-27

Lyres start their Spanish tour tomorrow April 24th in Granada! The Boston band led by Jeff Conolly visits us again with a well oiled 2014 line-up sounding as mighty as ever. Formed in the late 70s out of the ashes of the legendary DMZ, Lyres are one of the truly essential garage bands and their records have been a benchmark for the genre since the 80s. Many of their past Spanish gigs are still talked about in reverential terms and this tour promises to deliver the same kind of experience!

'O' LEVEL AND TEENAGE FILMSTARS

This Saturday 19th is Record Store Day and we join the celebrations with two special co-releases with Discos Alehop! which compile the recordings of ‘O’ Level and Teenage Filmstars, two of the early bands of maverick pop artisan Ed Ball, also a member of The Times and Television Personalities. Ed Ball has one of the most interesting music careers to come out of UK punk, spanning over three decades under different names and as a solo artist, and touching on pop, punk, new wave, psychedelia and anything else necessary in order to create pure pop art. You can find “Pseudo Punk” and “(There’s A) Cloud Over Liverpool” at your favourite record shop this Saturday 19th!

Talk in Granada

On Friday, March 7th Jaime Gonzalo will be in Granada to talk about his new book "La ciudad secreta", at the Bakakai bookshop from 19:30 hours. "La ciudad secreta" represents a wide survey of Barcelona's experimental underground during the 70s and 80s. It's a choral portrait where many of its protagonists are interviewed, and it sets out to restore the identity and importance of a stimulating period which, in musical terms, can be compared to Germany's krautrock, England's Canterbury Sound or the French avant-rock scene, and which created its own live circuit, closely connected to the fanzine and cassette culture and independent radio stations.

BILL BARTELL

aka PAT FEAR

We are really saddened by the loss of our friend Bill Bartell aka White Flag’s Pat Fear, one of the most important and active figures of Californian music of the last thirty-plus years.
Thanks to Bill we met and spent time with many of our heroes, and even got to work with some of them on several records. Along with Bill’s label Gasatanka, in 1992 Munster co-produced the first album by The Zeros, “Knockin’ Me Dead”, putting the band on the map again with an album they couldn’t make first time around. That same year, at one of Bill’s typical birthday dinners, we met members of the Germs, Redd Kross, Muffs, Sin 34, Al Flipside, Hole and even Drew Barrymore.
Bill worked tirelessly in the careers and promotion of not only bands such as Redd Kross, The Zeros or Middle Class but also Os Mutantes. He was the first person outside Brazil to champion them, not yesterday or two days ago… but in 1982.
We can’t forget his “production” on the first album by Los Piolines, or Chariot, the project he “tailor-made” with members of the Posies, Zeros and White Flag. Or the Germs 10” “Cat’s Clause”… Permanent Green Light (Michael Quercio’s band after The Three O’Clock)… And many other projects, some will remain unfinished… More recently, we worked with Bill on the Mike Atta benefit compilation “What Have We Wrought?”, one of the best collections of the most influential bands of US punk and hardcore.
An amazing guy who will keep the flame in our hearts burning.
