Bobby Benson (1922-1983) was an all round entertainer: musician, singer, comedian, magician and showman who pioneered highlife music in Nigeria after being seduced to the genre by the great ET Mensah. Many a legend in highlife and Nigerian music were nurtured in the hot houses of Benson’s orchestra and club, the Caban Bamboo. He had many hits but the first ‘Taxi Driver’ was the biggest and was popular right across West Africa. In 1964 Randy Weston covered his hit ‘Niger Mambo’ on his “African Cookbook” album.
