Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe (1934-2007) was Anambra State’s most famous son. Born in Atani, this prolific Igbo singer, composer, arranger and songwriter soaked up the pioneering efforts of Olaiya, ET Mensah, Bobby Benson et al. He came into his own during his time with the acclaimed trumpeter Zeal Oniya, with whom he honed his arranging and composing skills to create his own innovative brand of highlife. Osadebe incorporated social commentary along with the praise singing and extended the songs with long guitar solos which kept the audience on the dance floor. Somehow, despite the hardships he faced, Osadebe kept his live performance schedule going during the Biafran War and this gave him the platform for his music to take off and flourish throughout the 70s, 80s and beyond.
