Googoosh, born Faegheh Atashin in Tehran in 1950, is arguably one of Iran’s brightest stars. Her lush contralto voice appeared on hundreds of recordings and she acted in more than 20 movies. She recorded songs in English, French, Spanish and Italian, sang a duet with Tina Turner, and recorded an amazing cover of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’.
Despite being warned not to by friends, Googoosh returned to Iran shortly after the revolution, following an international tour. Her passport was confiscated as she entered the country and she was subsequently imprisoned and then silenced for 21 years before she finally escaped. She now lives in the US, where a thriving community of expatriate Iranians idolizes her and exorbitantly priced tickets to her concerts sell out within minutes.
