Here’s the word from Kofi himself: “Composed over 20 years ago by Ephraim Amu, who holds a degree of the London Royal Academy of Music, where he studied western music. For years he found that, in spite of his acquired knowledge, he was getting nowhere as an African musician. After going through a period of self-realisation he went back to his African roots and started to blossom. I consider him as my direct predecessor. Today this quiet and beautiful man is a professor of Music at Legon University in Accra, Ghana.

Kofi Ghanaba (Ghana’s child) (1923-2008) was a radical pioneering drummer. He was there at the beginning of highlife and brought to it the Afro-Cuban rhythms and calypso he soaked up during his time in New York and South America in the 40s. He was a founder member of the Tempos, joined subsequently by the trumpeter ET Mensah, who reformed the band under his own name when Ghanaba left for London and then New York, to explore jazz and Afro-Cuban and African drumming. He went on to shake up the American jazz scene when he introduced African percussion to the genre in the 1950s. Ghanaba described his performance on the drums as love making. He saw the African drums as a woman who could not be satisfied. “Is that all?” is what the drums seemed to ask after a hefty performance and to which he would respond “I will be back another time for another session”. The punch and power in him easily tore apart the vinyl covering on the western jazz drums but not the animal skin covering the African drums. Max Roach later remarked: “Ghanaba was so far ahead of what we were all doing, that none of us understood what he was saying – that in order for African-American music to be stronger, it must cross-fertilize with its African origins... We ignored him. 17 years later the African sound of Ghanaba is now being imitated all over the United States.”
