Manongo Mujica moved to Europe when he was very young in the 60s and while based in London was the drummer for the psychedelic rock band Los Mad’s where, close to Little Theatre and John Stevens, he discovered free improvisation. Manongo returned to Peru in 1973 and set up an experimental ensemble with Susana Baca, incorporating folk and tribal motifs that he would develop later in his solo career. That same year he met the Afro-Peruvian percussionist Julio “Chocolate” Algendones, and founded the influential jazz fusion group Perujazz, immersing himself in experimentation with Afro-Peruvian beats.
