He was nicknamed “Abbas gav (cow) seda (sound)” because his voice was as clear and as loud as a cow’s.
Born in 1928, Mehrpouya’s first instrument was the oud, an Arabic lute. In 1969 he went to India and studied sitar with the great Ravi Shankar. Mehrpouya collected sounds as he travelled the world and he often made his own instruments out of found objects, sometimes using pots and pans as a replacement for drums in his recordings. Mehrpouya has been credited with introducing lounge jazz to Iran and he was the first Iranian to feature the electric guitar in his songs.
