Born in 1941 in Benin City in Nigeria’s Edo State, school boy Victor Uwaifo would rush to watch and study the Tempos’ guitarist Dizzy Acquaye when ET Mensah’s band was in town. Uwaifo started his career in Bobby Benson’s band, jumped ship into Olaiya’s Cool Cats and then struck out to perfect his rhythm-driven, guitar-based highlife, and later incorporated the rhythms of the Benin coronation dance with soul and pop music to create a potent style he called Ekassa. He became famous for his spectacular live shows and his stunning virtuosity on the guitar, which he played with his hands, feet and tongue! He enjoyed numerous hits including ‘Joromi’, ‘Guitar Boy’ and ‘Mami Wata’.

Sir Victor Uwaifo was the first recipient of a gold disc awarded to an African and has 12 in all. He is an accomplished poet, sculptor and philosopher, justice of the peace and lecturer in Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Benin. He is now Benin’s minister for culture.
