An unknown English band arrives to Madrid in 1965, they see Lola Flores perform at a tablao (flamenco club) and decide to cover one of her classic song singing in a very particular Spanish. That is, roughly, what must have happened to The Tomcats. This novice English group, who would later mutate into July, Jade Warrior, John St Field or Tom Newman, arrived, took part in the film “Operación secretaria” and, full of courage, they applied numerous layers of riffs and fuzz over Rafael de León’s classic copla composition ‘A tu vera’. It’s not clear whether the band knew what they were singing about, but there is no doubt that they were clearly understood. A good dose of self-esteem for the Spanish scene.
