One of the earliest African recording artists, George Williams Aingo is thought to be a Fanti, but he sang in several West African languages. He was known for the intricate acoustic guitar picking style which was an amalgam of the cross rhythmic two-finger technique perfected by visiting Liberian Kru sailors and the local Fanti Osibisaba music which became palm wine – one of the cornerstones of highlife music. Aingo became the top artist on the British Zonophone label’s series of African recordings, in fact the first 16 of the initial 25 Zonophone releases in West Africa were all by George. He went on to record a total of 180 sides for them in just over three years.
