If we had to choose the Latin American country where the rawest and wildest garage and beat records of the \u201960s were recorded, Bolivia would be one of the clearest contenders. For some strange reason\u2014surely related to the country\u2019s extreme conditions, its high altitude, and the influence of huayno\u2014Bolivian recordings are truly unique and fascinating. <\/p>\n
A multitude of bands sprang up under the influence of groups\u2014mainly British\u2014that dominated the international charts. From the ashes of two of Bolivia\u2019s most important seminal bands, Los Black Byrds and The Turtles, two new groups fundamental to the history of Bolivian rock would be born: the mythical Climax and the legendary Loving Darks. <\/p>\n
\u201cLos Amantes Oscuros\u201d brings together for the first time on vinyl the recordings this band made between 1968 and 1969, originally released across three EPs on the local Lyra label.<\/p>\n
Their repertoire is packed with covers such as \u2018El Adivino,\u2019 a sped-up reinterpretation of \u2018Fortune Teller,\u2019 or even \u2018Algo de t\u00edtere,\u2019 a reworking of \u2018Jumpin\u2019 Jack Flash.\u2019 They also adapt the classic \u2018Call Me\u2019 by Tony Hatch and \u2018Toad\u2019 by Cream, from whom they borrow the cover of one of their most iconic albums for the artwork of their EP \u201cComplicado.\u201d In fact, \u2018Complicado\u2019\u2014a proto-punk version of the Rolling Stones\u2019 \u2018Complicated\u2019 and their signature track\u2014is a perfect example of how a Bolivian band could outdo the British giants in attitude and power. Their importance lies in having paved the way for new sounds, styles, and aesthetics within a still-emerging scene. <\/p>\n
