On October 7, 1974, the now-historic \u201cGusano mec\u00e1nico\u201d was released \u2014 the only full-length album by the legendary Bolivian rock band Climax. Founded in 1968 from the remnants of the disbanded Los Black Byrds and the unrealized project The Turtles, Climax was formed by guitarist Jos\u00e9 \u201cPepe\u201d Eguino and bassist Javier Sald\u00edas, who developed a strong bond with drummer \u00c1lvaro C\u00f3rdova, cemented by their shared passion for rock. Together, they embarked on a journey of self-discovery, spending several months in the United States during a crucial period straddling the end of the Summer of Love and the lead-up to Woodstock. <\/p>\n
This period, perhaps the most significant of the 1960s Bolivian countercultural movement, saw an explosion of artistic expression driven by dissatisfaction with the society that the youth had inherited from their parents. Within this context, the influence of iconic bands such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Blue Cheer, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer played a pivotal role in their decision to return to Bolivia and form the country’s first \u2018power trio\u2019. <\/p>\n
Their early EPs paid tribute to their musical heroes. The first of these is titled \u201cBorn to Be Wild\u201d (1969), including versions of \u2018Born to Be Wild\u2019 by Steppenwolf, \u2018Fire\u2019 by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and \u2018Sunshine of Your Love\u2019 and \u2018Tales of Brave Ulysses\u2019 by Cream. <\/p>\n
