Known as \u2018The Other Them\u2019 or as the \u2018Belfast Gypsies\u2019, or simply as \u2018Them\u2019 outside of the UK \u2014where Van Morrison\u2019s group was granted in court to use that name,\u2014 this bunch of Irish rockers (some of them former members of the real<\/em> Them) briefly became the world\u2019s most dangerous punk R&B band following a chance encounter with Kim Fowley.<\/p>\n

Sparks flew in the studio as howling Gloria\/Mystic Eyes R&B collided with the freakout<\/em> sounds of the Sunset Strip. Kim pushed hard to make the sound even rawer than it already was and, in a matter of months, a few releases saw the light of day in different countries \u2014under various names\u2014. \u2018Gloria\u2019s Dream\u2019 became a small hit in certain markets including Seattle, Orlando and Detroit.<\/p>\n

The band headed to Denmark where they could make some much-needed money touring as Them. In Copenhagen they recorded five more songs to complete the album, including \u2018Portland Town\u2019, \u2018Boom Boom\u2019, \u2018Midnight Train\u2019 and a superb version of \u2018It\u2019s All Over Now Baby Blue\u2019. Although Fowley wasn\u2019t present for the sessions, his influence can be clearly felt on a new band composition, \u2018Suicide Song\u2019.<\/p>\n

By late 1966 it was apparent that the band had run its course, and in early November, after some final shows in Stockholm, they quietly disbanded. Meanwhile, Fowley continued to make deals for their recordings.<\/p>\n

This double-LP comprises the complete works of the band, including the updated version of \u2018People! Let\u2019s Freak Out\u2019 \u2014as released on Island in 1966\u2014 with added psychedelic effects (apparently courtesy of Guy Stevens and Robert Wyatt) and a couple of demos recorded at KPS Sound Studio.<\/p>\n
